We explored the campground after setting up and found some great blooming cactii. We were admonished to walk only on pavement or designated trails, though, by a crabby but well-meaning park ranger. The rules at Chaco Culture are quite thoroughly enforced, which made for a slightly intimidating environment in which to experience all that Chaco has to offer.

The menu was great!

We really scored a nice site

Ronna and Mark all alone

Giant rocks nearby

The weather was perfect for us that weekend. It was hot during the day and cold at night so we all slept well. Ronna and Mark pitched their tent near the back of the box canyon. Dad slept in the car and I shared Mom's new tent with her. Dad brought his camp stove so we had plenty of hot water for cocoa and cider and to wash dishes. We brought firewood fora campfire but there was a thriving ant colony living under our fire pit so we couldn't sit around it. We cooked burgers on the grill, though, swatting ants from our shoes as we tended the patties. Everyone chipped in and made light work of unloading the car, preparing meals, and washing up. There is no camp store at Chaco, so Mom and Dad planned carefully to make sure we'd have enough ice and supplies.
